A damaged timber fence doesn’t always need to be completely replaced. In many cases, replacing a few rotten posts or broken rails can restore the fence for many more years while keeping costs much lower than installing a brand-new fence.
Recently, we completed a fence restoration project in Carlow where several structural components had deteriorated due to years of exposure to Ireland’s wet climate.
Common signs that your fence needs repair
- Rotten or cracked fence posts
- Loose or broken horizontal rails
- Timber affected by moisture
- Leaning fence sections
- Peeling or faded protective stain
Our repair process
For this project we:
- Removed the damaged posts and rails.
- Installed new pressure-treated timber.
- Secured the new posts in fresh concrete.
- Checked the alignment of every section.
- Applied a high-quality exterior wood stain to protect the timber from rain and UV damage.
The result was a strong, attractive fence that blended well with the existing property without the expense of replacing the entire structure.
How to extend the life of a timber fence
Regular maintenance can significantly increase the lifespan of your fence.
We recommend:
- Inspecting timber every year.
- Re-staining every 2–4 years.
- Replacing damaged boards before moisture spreads.
- Keeping plants and soil away from wooden posts where possible.
If your fence has become damaged or unstable, Carlow Handyman can assess whether repair or replacement is the most cost-effective solution.
